Toothache Man Grotesque

16.00

The Bishop of Bath & Wells, William Bytton the younger, died in 1274. His tomb was visited in the hope of relief for toothache.

A number of grotesques reflect this theme within the cathedral, both comical and repulsive at the same time. This grotesque can be found as a capital detail in the West bay of the South transept of Wells Cathedral.
