Poseidon was the great Olympian God of the sea, rivers, flood and drought. In one myth, dolphin messengers were sent to bring him a nymph he loved, Amphitrite, whom would later become a sea-goddess and Poseidon’s wife. As a reward, he set the dolphin in the sky as a constellation.
Dolphins, in Greek mythology, were often depicted rescuing humans in danger.
